Abandonment in His Presence
David’s passion for the presence of God is supremely demonstrated in this passage. First, notice the huge sense of sacrifice, honouring and costly worship:
When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf.
– 2 Samuel 6:13
Secondly, notice the huge sense of joy and celebration because finally the ark was coming back to the centre of the nation:
And David danced before the Lord with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and the sound of the horn.
– 2 Samuel 6:14-15
Here is David, the king, not wearing kingly robes, choosing to lay aside his pride and status in passionate and abandoned worship before the presence of the King of Kings! This didn’t go down well with his wife.
As the ark of the Lord was entering the City of David, Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart.
– 2 Samuel 6:16
David was making clear that He wasn’t worshipping for the sake of people but before the Lord who had chosen him:
I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this…
– 2 Samuel 6:21-22

So, let’s take time to consider:
- How much are we prepared to abandon any sense of pride, to worship wholeheartedly before the Lord? What would that look like in our personal times of private devotions and in our public times when worshipping with other believers?
- How much are we prepared to give of ourselves, our time, our talents, our treasure, our bodies (see Romans 12:1), as an act of worship to the Lord?
